John Wick (2014)

John Wick walks with his gun
Summit Entertainment

When one of the best action movies of the last 10 years is streaming for free, you’re doing yourself a disservice by not watching it. We’re referring to John Wick, the action film starring Keanu Reeves as the titular hitman. John Wick (Reeves) left the criminal underworld to live a peaceful life with his wife, Helen (Bridget Moynahan). When Helen tragically dies, she sends John a puppy to help him grieve. One night, the son of a Russian crime boss (Alfie Allen) breaks into John’s home, steals his car, and kills the puppy.

To say that was a huge mistake would be an understatement. Hell-bent on revenge, John puts on his snazzy black suit, grabs a gun, and sets off on a path of vengeance. Directed by Chad Stahelski, John Wick reinvigorated Reeves’ career, returning the talented actor to A-list status. Because of its dazzling stunt work, the John Wick franchise has become the gold standard for action sequences.

Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

A soldier runs through a battlefield.
Lionsgate

Hacksaw Ridge is a story so unfathomable that you have to believe it. No one could conjure up a story this inspiring from their imagination. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield) joins the United States Army as a combat medic. Desmond is a conscientious objector, meaning he refuses to pick up a gun. In basic training, Desmond is shunned by his fellow soldiers.

However, Desmond never caves, earning the respect of his group over time. It all comes to a head during the Battle of Okinawa. With the Americans pinned down, Desmond puts his life on the line to save others. This selflessness is at the heart of Hacksaw Ridge, a gripping war thriller about one man’s faith and heroism.

Geostorm (2017)

A group of scared people run for their lives.
Warner Bros.

Disaster movies are great forms of escapism. There’s something about watching a group of people save the world that makes for a good blockbuster. Geostorm, the 2017 film by Dean Devlin, was initially destroyed by critics. Upon further examination, Geostorm isn’t that bad, and that’s a credit to one man: Gerard Butler, whose commitment to making 1990s-style action movies should be applauded.

To combat climate change, a team of scientists led by Jake Lawson (Butler) created “Dutch Boy,” an intricate series of climate-controlling satellites that can manipulate the weather to prevent natural disasters. A few years later, Dutch Boy begins to malfunction. After an initial investigation, Jake learns a group of terrorists planted a virus in Dutch Boy to create a geostorm that could wipe out most of mankind. While Jake tries to stop the virus in space, his brothe,r Max (Jim Sturgess), searches for the person behind the virus. Time is ticking, and the world’s fate rests in the brothers’ hands.

If you have to stream one scary movie this Halloween, watch this one
A woman lies on the ground in Saint Maud.

Long before she was saving Middle-earth on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Morfydd Clark made a name for herself in one of the wildest horror movies of the past decade. Saint Maud may not be one of the movies you think of first when you think of recent horror classics, but it's a movie that definitely deserves to be part of any Halloween watchlist.

The film follows Maud, a highly religious young nurse who becomes convinced that she has to save her patient's soul before she dies. As she goes to increasingly dramatic lengths to achieve that end, and to purify herself, we see exactly how fanatical she really is. Here are three reasons the movie is worth checking out this spooky season.

Stop! And watch these 3 great movies leaving Netflix by November 1
Brad Pitt runs down a street with soldiers.

Unfortunately, the end of the month on Netflix means several movies will be exiting the service. Several movies with Chucky the killer doll — including Bride of Chucky, Child’s Play 2, and Child’s Play 3 — are leaving right after Halloween. The Expendables franchise and two Magic Mike movies will also be following suit.

Overall, over 40 movies will be leaving Netflix by November 1. Before the month ends, peruse this list and see if anything catches your eye. While some of these movies will go to other streaming services, others may be in limbo with no home, so watch them now before it's too late. Our three recommendations are a zombie action movie, a harrowing drama, and an underrated horror flick.

3 underrated movies you need to watch in November 2024
movies you need to watch november 2024 juror no 2 poster

November is a prime month for moviegoing. The Thanksgiving holiday offers a great opportunity for studios to release their fall tentpole pictures and for audiences to watch as many films as possible. This year is no different as blockbusters-to-be like Gladiator 2 and Wicked are waiting in the wings to dazzle eyeballs and gobble some dollars.

It's not all big movies in November, though. Oscar hopefuls and under-the-radar movies populate the release schedule, and the following three films have the potential to be not only entertaining, but also some of the year's best in cinema.
