3 new Xbox Game Pass games to try this weekend (October 18-20)

South Park The Fractured But Whole
Ubisoft

While the first half of October was fairly light on new Xbox Game Pass additions, the back half of the month is a lot more exciting. Of course, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is the month’s biggest release, but that’s still a week away. Meanwhile, this week saw two great RPGs and an excellent indie game hit Microsoft’s subscription service. If you’re wondering what you should be playing this weekend, all three of these new Xbox Game Pass additions are worthy of your time.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole

While this year’s South Park: Snow Day was a disappointment, the two Ubisoft-published games that preceded it narratively are stellar. One of those, the superhero-themed South Park: The Fractured But Whole, just came to Xbox Game Pass. This game perfectly captures the handcrafted look of the show with its art and the franchise’s crass humor through its increasingly ridiculous story about Cartman, a new kid, and their other friends pretending to be superheroes. It’s a surprisingly well-made grid-based tactical RPG, making it a significantly better game than it may seem on the surface.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole is available across PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Cloud Gaming with a Game Pass subscription. It’s also on Nintendo Switch and part of the PlayStation Plus Extra game catalog on PS4.

Donut County

Donut County - Duality of Holes Trailer

Some of the best indie games take one charming idea and explore it to its fullest. Donut County is one such game, as players control a hole that gets bigger whenever something falls into it. Developer Ben Esposito found so many clever ways to utilize this mechanic, both for puzzles and to create some Katamari Damacy-style satisfaction as the hole gets bigger and bigger. On top of all that, it features a charming story following the residents of the titular Donut County, who have all fallen into the hole. If you haven’t played Donut County before, it’s worth checking out on Game Pass as it takes just a couple of hours to complete.

Game Pass subscribers can check out the PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Cloud Gaming versions of Donut County. It’s also on PS4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android.

MechWarrior 5: Clans

Finally, we have MechWarrior 5: Clans, the latest entry in a long-running series of Mecha games. It takes a more focused approach than 2019’s MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, with a delicately handcrafted narrative. Still, it features the same satisfying mecha action and RPG elements the series is known for.

MechWarrior 5: Clans is available across PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming with a Game Pass Ultimate subscription. It’s also on PS5.

3 new Xbox Game Pass games to check out this weekend (September 20-22)
Key art for Frostpunk 2.

As the fall season approaches, the number of high-profile Xbox Game Pass additions is rising. That said, the service also does a great job of appealing to players who are fans of more specific, niche genres. September 2024 has been particularly kind to Xbox Game Pass subscribers who are fans of simulation or strategy games that require a deeper level of engagement and dedication. These are the kinds of games I'm recommending to you this week, especially because one of them launches right into Microsoft's video game subscription service today.
Frostpunk 2

Later today, Frostpunk 2 will get its wide release on PC and be available to Game Pass subscribers. It is a more ambitious sequel to an enthralling yet stressful city-builder in which players try to survive in a harsh, snowy apocalypse. Frostpunk 2 increases the scale of things as players try to maintain the restored civilization they built from scratch in the first game. It exacerbates the already stressful nature of real-time city-builders but in a way that works perfectly in its postapocalyptic world. Frostpunk 2 is only available on PC, and you can play it there with a PC Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

Xbox Game Pass’ new Standard tier is missing some big games
Lilith staring into the camera in Diablo 4. She has giant horns and red wings behind her.

Players are digging into Xbox Game Pass now that the company has officially launched its new Xbox Game Pass Standard tier. However, they've discovered that it's missing quite a few noteworthy titles, including some that were already on the service before Xbox switched to its new payment structure.

Xbox published a post on September 10 marking the move, and explaining its new Game Pass plans in a succinct manner. Want to just use your Xbox for multiplayer? Grab Game Pass Core. Just want games on your PC? Get PC Game Pass. Game Pass Standard, arguably the most confusing new tier of the bunch when it was announced back in July, is for people who want to "level up [their] Xbox console gaming experience at a great value." It costs $15 per month compared to Ultimate's $20 per month (up from $17).

Overwatch 2 skins: Cardboard Reinhardt, Turtleship D.Va, Cyberdragon Hanzo, Street Runner Genji, Bee Mercy, and Cleric Lifeweaver

Blizzard Entertainment surprise dropped Overwatch 2 on Xbox Game Pass on Tuesday, despite the game being free to play and already on Xbox.

You might find this to be a strange addition, but as a Blizzard blog post specifies, this is more about encouraging players to link their Battle.net and Xbox accounts. As a reward, players that do so will receive six exclusive skins: Cardboard Reinhardt, Turtleship D.Va, Cyberdragon Hanzo, Street Runner Genji, Bee Mercy, and Cleric Lifeweaver. (The image of a Reinhardt in a cardboard suit is delightful.) Players will also get 30 Mythic Prisms that they can use in the Mythic Shop for other skins.
